I'm impressed of www.riflescopeblog.com , I need to say. Really not often do I encounter a blog that's each educative and entertaining, and let me inform you, you have got hit the nail on the head. Your concept is outstanding; the difficulty is one thing that not sufficient people are speaking intelligently about. I'm very blissful that I stumbled throughout this in my seek for something regarding this.

Hi Steve, just came across your blog site as i search for an answer about scopes. You sound like the guy who can answer my question. i've never hunted with a scope, mostly because i was usually horseback in the high country of Colorado and Montana (Bob Marshall Wilderness) and it was 'un-handy' to do so. Now, i'm a much older guy and the eyes ain't what they used to be, so i'm "in the market" for a scope. Can you tell me what the difference is between a rifle scope and a "Scout" scope?

I'm heading back to NM for a guided elk hunt I did last year. Saw tremendous bulls but couldn't get closer than 400-600 yds in some cases. If I had the equipment to shoot that far I could have shot a 350"+ bull every day. I'm going to bring my 300 Weatherby Magnum this time but want a tactical scope where I can simply dial in the distance on a custom turret, put the cross hairs on the chest and pull the trigger. I'm struggling to zero in on the best choices and values for this. Do you have any thoughts or recommendations on where to look or who to ask?

>Hey there! I just bought a Savage 220 for my son and installed a DNZ Game Reaper mount #182000s.This mount is made for the 220.The rings are off-set to allow for shorter scopes. I ordered this from DNZ directly and talked to them personally. They shipped quiclkly and are a first rate company to deal with. I don't think you will be dissapointed.

>Excellent article -- clear, informative, and well written. I would offer only one comment on boresighting. Its main purpose is to verify that the scope axis is aligned with the barrel so that the scope's initial windage and elevation settings remain essentially centered.<br />Well done.

>I think I'm going to give the edge to Pelican, overall. Sure it's heavy, but you can't beat the protection with the foam. I bought my Pelican 1750 from <a href="http://pelicanonline-ralphs.com/mod_1750_large-case-2.htm>Ralph's Pelican Cases</a> and it's the lowest price you'll find.

>Wow! This is great for those night vision equipment users who want to save money in operating it. Definitely, readers will do their best to find one of these in the market to have a double purpose. It is wonderful to have a night vision equipment and be safe yet helps you to save money on batteries.

>Thanks. I always prefer more magnification for long range paper shooting. For field use when field of view and quicker target acquisition is important,I like lower powers, but for paper I like to stay with lots of power. Good luck!

>I have recently began my search for a quality high power scope and was searching for just such an answer-being inexperienced at long-range shooting and not wanting to waste my money. This was the most clearly stated answer I have found! I was looking at Nightforce scopes and in your opinion would I be better served with a 3.5-15 x50 first focal plane or a 5.5-22 x50 second focal?? Thanks again!

>When deciding on the best binoculars for hunting, it is important to remember that a $500 set is more than twice as good as a $250 set. But a $1500 set will probably not be three times as good as a $500 set, or twice as good as a $750 set. Therefor, like mentioned before, go with the best that you can afford. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.bestforhunting.com/?p=42" rel="nofollow">www.bestforhunting.com</a>

>Thanks for the comment! Cats eat game. In some cases, if you see a cat and don't shoot it, you won't be allowed back. Some cats serve purposes like keeping mice and rats at manageable levels, and it's all up to the landowner's wishes. BTW, I don't know of anyone that eats coyotes, either, although my wife has made me eat crow a few times. Thanks for reading, and good luck!

>I enjoy reading other people hunting experience so thanks for making this blog. Is killing a cat considered ok in the hunting community? I just took a hunting class and the experienced hunters swear by eating what they kill. This did strike me as a bit strange so was wondering if you can say a bit more about that. Otherwise hope you get an elk next time.<br /><br />Dounan

>Use the exact Leupold mount and base in the article. The 2-7 Leupold has even a bit more mounting room than the Nikon. I just installed this mounting system on my Savage. Have fun!

>I just bought a Savage 220f in Black and have a Leupold 2X7 I want to mount on it. What would you suggest? I see the Picattiny rest is out of stock with no date of arrival. I need to put something on sooner than that yet. Thanks

>Great idea, Craig. Makes a lot of sense. I guess I don't worry about the alignment too much since I lap afterwards, and I don't expect them to line up perfectly, but your idea is a great one. Thanks.

>Craig Fisher has left a new comment on your post "Lapping Scope Rings": <br /><br />This is a great article. There are many different brands of lapping tools available. I purchased a Wheeler, not because I think it's the best, but it came with the 30mm and 1" tools as a combination kit for a fairly good price. I did find a remarkable problem with the alignment rods included. The directions tell you to place one in each ring and align the rings until the rod points are touching point to point. I guarentee you that this will not give you a true alignment. To prove my point, lay the rods on a flat surface, point end to point end, touching. You can move one or the other a degree or two to the left or right and they still touch, but your eyes won't notice the offset until you have someone place a straight edge along them. You are best served by placing the rods flat end to flat end touching in the center. You can then visually see if there needs to be a correction in your alignment. Trust me on this one.

>Recently Leupold issued a warning that fake Leupold scopes were being sold, so if you purchase one be certain to call the company’s toll free number at 800-538-7653 and give them the serial number. They will let you know if you are purchasing an authentic Leupold rifle scope. Their scopes are known for the long eye relief they provide. Eye relief is the distance from the eye piece to your eye that allows you to see the entire sight picture. While many scopes offer only 2.5 to 3 inches of eye relief, a Leupold offers 4 inches of eye relief.

>I also visited the SHOT! It was really great! In my experience, Nikon has been making steady improvements in their <a href="http://www.riflescopes.webyshops.com/items/Nikon-Rifle-Scopes?partner=1" rel="nofollow"> Nikon rifle scopes</a> category. The quality of glass and moving components has improved along with more rugged design and higher attention to fit and finish of the riflescopes.
>The Swarovski is one of the world's best in terms of light transmission. You're paying for that, as well as the high magnification range. The Z6 illuminated reticle is the best I have seen.

>Is Swarowski Z6 realy worth the money? What about the Z5, Nikon Monarch?, Zeiss Conquest? I hate to say it but Bushnell Elite 6500 with the DOA ret has the absolute best specs. 2.5 - 16 X 42 30MM. WOW! That is the best on the market! Money is an object but I want the best. I'm afraid the crosshairs on the Z6 are to fine to see in low light. Kinda makes the light gathering a waste if you can't see the cross hairs.

>Are you sure the UltimateSlam is a VX-II? The Leupold website specifications say that the difference between the VX-I and VX-II is that the VX-II has click adjustments instead of friction adjustments and also that it has fully multicoated lenses (multicoat 4 lens system) instead of exterior lens multicoatings (standard multicoat lens system). The UltimateSlam is listed as having finger click adjustment and standard multicoat lens system. I would be inclined to say that it is actually a VX-I with nicer adjustments and a fancy ballistic reticle system.

>Cool review. I love my 1750 cases. They have taken more abuse than you could ever imagine. I keep 4 pistols with clips and accessories in one, and my shotgun in the the other. Truly a great product.

>You can certainly use the reticle for any cartridge. You have to do your homework by shooting with your given load and laser rangefinding to see where the POI lines up with the stadia lines in your scope. No shortcuts! Have fun!

>The BDC reticle will work for any cartridge if you do the homework by shooting with your given load and monitoring the distance with a laser rangefinder and seeing where on your reticle your point of impact lines up. Ya gotta do your homework. Have fun!
